Monster!! Cue the stringed instruments…

I’ve spoken with him about them, and they’re catching a LOT of large sharks out there. I’m going to try and go with them on a trip soon.

Everyone wondered why the shark looks “flat” or “deflated,” they had to gut her just to get her on the boat…

Find out where you can get one of these reels. Then MAYBE you could handle one.

Monster Sharks?..Monster reel! Nooo problem… :stuck_out_tongue: She WAS a big one.

Is that a longline reel?

Looks like a lot of fins on the dock there. Sure he isn’t catching sharks, saying it is a “legal” catch and just harvesting fins. What do they do with the rest of the fish meat, grind it up and donate it to the local animal shelter?

Man we keep catching large sharks… Yup just keep killing em all and then there wont be any left. Tiger Sharks are listed as Threatened 1 step before endangered. Keep it up. If you want to catch shark to sell cant Blacktips or Sharpnose something that is over populated right now NOT big Tiger Sharks!

Let’s name him Cecil the Tigershark…

That’s even more ****ed up. It struggled to death on a Long Line Hook? Good… Lets keep calling this guy a hero. Do a little research into Shark Conservation. Long Lining is irresponsible as ****. Lots of damage done to the ocean ecosystem. Non Target Animals caught… Large Sharks like this Tiger did not deserve to die this way. Plus the amount of mercury in a shark that large is NOT good to eat. I don’t know about ya’ll but If in the mood for shark meat I would rather hook a small SharpNose or something that is currently over populated for my dinner plate. Call me a tree hugger i really dont give a **** but what i do know is that Im a human being and this is ****ing dumb.

Over the last few decades, shark populations around the world have started to show signs of trouble, and NATURE?s Shark Mountain reveals one of the causes. In one scene, a hook and line trails from a shark?s mouth like a slender warning flag ? a remnant from a close call with a longline fishing boat.

Luckily, this shark escaped, but researchers say many other sharks have not been as lucky. Longliners ? which set lines that can be up to 15 miles long and are laden with hundreds or thousands of baited hooks ? pose an increasingly potent threat to sharks, which are often hunted for their fins and meat. Other marine animals not intended to be caught by longliners, such as sea turtles and seabirds, can also take the bait and drown.

I had a seagull get wrapped up in a shark rig once felt terrible watching him struggle for 5 min and im no tree hugger either-but like you folly fisher I do have a sense of compassion and responsibility and youve got to feel for cecil the shark, no way to go for such a majestic beast. what happens to the rest of the dead stuff that publix or harris teeter cant sell, and by the way the bird somehow freed himself.
( No animals were hurt during this posting)

It’s a bit ironic, but I find fishing actually puts me more in touch with nature, and has if anything increased my compassion towards the animals. I keep many, but out of respect I always use the meat, either for myself or bait. Very little gets wasted.

I have talked to many hunters who say they feel the same way about deer. I’m not a tree hugger either BTW,

Yea I lost a red once-I repeat once and If im not going to eat it I feel like sh–t if I loose an animal or fish. I spent 10 minutes trying to revive it knowing that the bite was on. Didnt know whether to put the over slot fish into the cooler and risk it or set it back into the ocean. I put him back into the ocean and for the rest of the day he kept washing up time after time to my feet and reminded me of my failure. I failed that day-but learned a great deal about what not to do.

I have practiced catch and release since I was about 15 years old. Haven’t lost a red yet and have never kept one in the slot. I’m no tree hugger either. I hold nothing against anyone that catches and keeps legal fish. It does ruin my day to watch someone catch a big ray and slice it up for shark bait. I guess it’s like eating a steak. I didn’t kill it, but I’ll sure eat it. I eat seafood with the same attitude I suppose. The thrill of the catch and watching it swim away beats whacking its head off to me. I personally caught over 100 Sharpnose this year and returned them all to the water. The Tiger does piss me off. Long lines should be banned.

I always release rays, and personally I don’t de-barb them either. That seems a bit unfair to the fish to me. I don’t keep anything that isn’t legal and/or I’m not going to use.

I have absolutely NO problem catching to eat, In moderation. I caught a 19" flounder last year at folly… Your (**() right it went home with me but… are Flounder on the brink of being put on the endangered species list? No… Same thing with Deer. There needs to be stronger shark regulations. Did you know that technically a commercial fishermen is allowed to keep 36 Tiger Sharks per day! Thats crazy considering Recreational fishermen can only keep 1 per day! Its all about the money! Due to a process called Biomagnification the longer and fish is alive the more mercury build up is in the fish. A large Tiger like the one in question (Due to Biomagnification) has a LARGE amount of Mercury build up. I personally spoke with Bryan Fraiser from the DNR through Email about this subject. He himself was personally upset about the shark being killed but the rules for commercial fishermen are there to bring profit to the city. Unfortunately nothing will be done about it because Money runs everything. Like i said before there are LOTS of other species of Shark that can be kept for meat… Many other over populated species in Charleston. And YES i agree Long Lining should be banned its SUPER inhumane. Long Lines often catch non target species such as Sea Turtle, Dolphins, and protected Fish species. But you sure as hell wont see someone bragging about catching any of those in the newspaper!

For the record, he didn’t brag about it. He put a picture on his facebook page and it went crazy due to our fascination with sharks recently.

The fisherman did not promote this circus.

Long lining and hate to say it, trawler net drag shrimping, are really inefficient fishing methods. The bycatch often outnumbers the target species and a lot of that bycatch is ‘wasted’ unless you like feeding pelicans and seagulls.
