Want everyone to know that some credit needs to go to whitelakebuc and his buddies that have perfected a technique for catching hogfish. I am not sure if they’ve shared the details, but what I read earlier this year on another forum was his story of their pursuit of this species and getting them on rod and reel. I was really motivated to learn more about this fish after reading what they’d posted about their learning curve and attempts and finally successes. I probably spent about a week reading everything I could find about these fish and asking divers about their observations. I can tell you that what I learned did help me catch this fish, but I will never sit here and tell you that my skill or knowledge is to be credited for this. This was a blessing, and I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time and to have been made curious and encouraged by what I saw other anglers doing. I have yet to purposefully target the species on a trip, but when I felt what was going on on this last trip I started thinking about what I’d learned about these fish and how to apply that to making changes in what I was doing to try to hook whatever it was that was taking my bait each drop. I wanted to target these fish, but in a way now- I don’t. This trip was special, and I hope everybody gets that out of what I’ve shared. A lot of things and people helped us do this. That’s the best part. Remember that when you ever have a chance to learn from other anglers or scientists. Again, I am just very blessed that these things came together with this fish, and I have enjoyed this. I know someone will break this (pending) record, and they will have the same excitement as us.

Y’all.
The video to have would have been one of what Scott did to me when he weighed the fish.

My scale was saying 22lbs. I knew this fish was close, and quite possibly wouldn’t be anything to brag about if just a few pounds off. I don’t know anything about guess-ti-weighing any hogfish, but the fish felt heavier than 20lb to me to pick up and tote.

Scott put the fish on the scale and looked at me saying, “Now what’d you say the state record was?” I say, “20lb 8oz.”
Scott poked his lip out and looked back at the scale. Then he looked back at me and shook his head.
I said, “Well???”
He said, “Bo…,” with that look of disappointment on his face, “15lbs 7oz.”
I said, “DO WHAT???”

Then he’s yells, “I’m just messin with you man!!! check it out!”

I look over and the scale says 21.95 lbs.

I punched Scott in the shoulder and then did a state record dance. Didn’t even think about world record until DNR already had the fish and was looking around to see what other state’s records were just out of curiousity. Then I saw a little asterisk * beside the NC record. I punched myself that time and did a world record dance.

Can’t believe it.

Hope I can do all the paperwork right, because I know I won’t be able to get another fish like this again!

oh and I didn’t think Scott even had a sense of humor…always so business-like and serious when I go in there to get fiddlers and worms…

I remember seeing your scamp. Congrats on that. I weighed one in a few years ago that was right at 23lbs hoping it was a record. Yours was a stud indeed!

Bonzo, I can give you a pretty good imitation of the record dance…only thing that was missing at the time of the morning was if Phin had been wearing some “hammer” pants. CAN"T TOUCH THIS!

It was classic my friends, classic. Seriously though, could not be happier for Phin. Good things come to good people.

Way to go Phin, I say a well deserved reward for all you do to defend our rights.

Cool vids as well.

Thanks!

sorry I’m so late to weigh in, but it’s inevitable, its about the passion. could not have happened to a more dedicated and passionate fisherman, AS IT SHOULD BE! I have shot hogs that were close to this record and was aboard a boat when Zack shot a 17.5lb sheephead, a state record.(can’t weigh in with a hole in his head). for outdoorsmen it is at a different level. the satisfaction to know that you have achieved these plateaus with good friends, under the conditions we deal with on every trip is a high that is unparalleled, except when it is shared with my kids! congrats to phin and crew to a job well done! Ed.

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

I’m still excited about this catch. What a blessing.
