Tigress 9/11/11 - world record trip

Definitly can’t think of anyone more deserving of this record then Phin. Ya see Phin, even the fish Gods are pleased with all the hard work you do for all of us in protecting our rights to keep fishing! Job well done!

caught on clam , sea urchin , crab or lobster is my guess.

I know what the secret bait is and the special rigging. I’ve seen it in action!:slightly_smiling_face::face_with_head_bandage: And to think…out of the blue I send him a text this morning asking when the migration of the big fish south will be only to find out he’s a new world record holder…hopefully. Amazing. Great job Phin!! You da MAN!!!

Hey Tigress first of all great fish on rod and reel,I was with Cline when he caught the former record and never thought it would have lasted this long.Secondly I understand you need a fish that big to get a mold I might be able to help you out.Give me a call(843)_602-0910 or email me and I will see if I can help you.

Phin, congratulations on a great catch. For your first one you made it count! Pete and I have been after the record for four years and haven’t been able to get it yet. We have over 500 H&L and none over 21. Glad you were able to put a theory together and prove it.

To save Phin the harassment over the bait… I will come out and be the first to tell the secret. The secret bait is LGAM.

Here is a picture of LGAM.

Little Green Army Men. The prone position seems to take the biggest hogs. Ask for them at you local tackle store today!

Thanks, Steve!

BlindHawg, if anything I know for sure from this, it’s that I’ve got a greater respect for Mr. Cline, DiHrd and Whitelakebuc right now.

Lots of people tell me they want to go after the fish with me now because they think it was just a matter of using the right bait, but strangely enough I am in no hurry. That attitude doesn’t do the hogfish much justice at all. I Have a lot of respect for the fish after what it took to get it in. There’s WAY more to it than simply bait and technique. I know there are bigger ones out there according to divers, but they aren’t going to be easy to catch (obviously). The fish are pretty much built to defeat hook and line, and like I’ve told a few people- if I was in the same place with the same fish again I don’t know if I could land the fish a second time!

It’s just a fish, Jedi mind tricks don’t work on them.

Hell I saw a 10 year old kid catch a 20lb Red Snapper in the Gulf on a piece of bubblegum, because he was getting bored using cigars and squid. I watched him hook it on, drop it down and after hitting the bottom, it was fish on, made easy work with an electric reel.

congrats, nice fish.

I still just want to know if you got to eat the fish or do the “record” people keep the fish?

Before I realized the fish would be a world record, I had my cousin take it to DNR for them to verify for the state record and for them to get info on the fish. I told them on the phone I had no problem with them pulling the otilith and gonads to get that data since so little is known about this species. I told them I did want the fish back because I planned on eating it. My cousin really helped me out by taking it down to Ft. Johnson Monday as I work out of town and couldn’t do that during business hours.

About the time I was looking around at other state hogfish records late Monday afternoon, I saw the NC record. There was an asterisk beside it. I looked down on the bottom of the page, and it stated that the NC record was the world record. Mine is heavier…

I immediately became worried about how DNR has already doing whatever with the fish, and was hoping there was not some rule about IGFA needing the fish whole.

As that was going through my mind, I got a text from my cousin saying DNR fileted the fish and that he would leave the filets for me at my house. I told him that really stunk because of what I’d found out but I appreciated him helping me out and to get a piece for himself.

Not DNR’s fault. They didn’t know either. However, there’s nothing in the IGFA rules I’ve seen requiring the whole fish to be examined by them. Plenty people saw the fish caught, weighed and there were several biologists at DNR who dealt with the fish. IGFA does require lots of witnessing, affidavits and investigation. Certified weight, certification by a biologist (SCDNR), etc. are also needed. Makes perfect sense or else people could cheat.

All that’s taken care of except the paperwork, which I will call IGFA to help with filling out. Have to make sure I understand the questions right. For example, my reel has almost all braid on it with a short topshot of mono. So is that classified by IGFA as “backing” or is it “main line?” Want to make sure I get it all right so that I am not kicked out for a tech

awsome, thanks.

Again, Kudos there Phin. Hope all works out for ya but I do have a question regarding eating one that large. Is Ciguatera poisoning an issue/concern?? Just wondering.

Thanks,

I think its mercury that accumulates in the big ones. Same with those big tasty lobsters and monster cobia, but as long as you’re not a small child or pregnant, you should be good to go as long as that’s not your only food source.

Have you checked this taxidermist out? Beautiful fish and congratulations!
