Trenchards Inlet?

My brother in law is coming down this weekend and wants to find some deep holes to catch some big sharks. Last time he was here we trailered the boat down to the Fripp Inlet and that 80ft hole, but didn’t get anything big.

I just put the boat up at the Port Royal marina for the month and don’t really feel like pulling it out again to take it to Fripp unless its really worth it, so I was looking for alternatives we could navigate to in the boat. I saw two this morning that got me interested, and one was the 60ft hole where Trenchard’s Inlet meets Station Creek. Has anyone fished this spot? Is it going to be hard to get there coming from port royal and crossing bay point? Would I be better off trailering to this spot? Is there good fishing there I guess should have been the first question?

The second spot was the south side of Morgan’s Island. Not so much because it has a deep hole, but because last time I was up there around low tide (WITH NO FISHING POLES! )the fish finder was going nuts the whole time.

Any other ideas? Comments?

Thanks,
Adam

I know the parrot creek area is full of shark. Where the creek meets the Morgan River, there is a pretty deep hole. I haven’t been out there this year, but it is typically a good shark hole.

“Now I’m knee deep in the water somewhere, got the blue sky breeze blowin wind through my hair, only worry in the world is the tide gonna reach my chair.”

You can navigate around the sand bar in the PRS through Station creek, it’s a pretty easy route following the main creek to get to TI. There are several sandbars that cut through the middle of the creek and you’ll have to know which sides to hang on. There is one skinny portion before you get to an old worn out flag marking a point. I don’t know what kind of boat you have but to be safe I’d plan on running that not knowing your way around at a 3’ positive tide. I’ve churned mud at a -.03 tide running 50mph in a flats boat on that skinny part. Plenty of good fishing out that way but if you’re leaving the PR landing you’re passing a whole craptruck full of good spots getting to that hole.

If you’re running over to the hole in near Morgan stay wide until the Green Can at low tide and don’t try the short cut near the old shrimp boat if you see birds standing. I’ve tossed an anchor for awhile pulling off of that flat at a last minute “Do you think we can get across that flat? It looks a little skinny…” “Sure!!!You got plenty of room” And if you’re coming from the coosaw probably leave 200yrds from the bank at low and you’ll be good to go. Good luck.

we fished the mouth of trenchards inlet last summer and caught a couple of big sharks. The biggest was a 7 foot sand shark on live mullet on the bottom.

Adam here’s my experience at Trenchards. 2 years ago while Trout fishing we ran across a school of menhaden. Cast net out and plenty in the livewell. Proceeded to your 60ft hole and wore the 3 to 4ft sands out. 1 five ft out of maybe 9 to 11 sharks. This year, same scenario except for the sharks. Nothing but pups. Went back with fresh mullet 2 weeks later and same result(nothing). This was the last week of June and July 4th week.
By the way, hit the Gordon later that day and did catch a few Blacktips around 3 ft. BSB out ya butt and then there’s the Blues! Weather gotta be calm though! Anyway, I’m just saying!

Good Catchin!

I’d fish in Port Royal Sound if the boat is at the Port Royal Marina.

I’ve got a 1900CC Key West with about 9-10" of draft. I’ve heard from the locals that Station Creek is a good spot but is very tricky when the water gets low.

I’ve never really had much luck in the sound before, or up the intercoastal by the bridge either. Granted I’m new to the area and just getting into fishing as well. What other spots would I be passing on the way to Bay Point (that you’re willing to tell me about)? I’ve been mostly trying the other side of Parris Island over by the bridge, the train tressle, and the hump, but never really hitting anything big.

Thanks for the replies btw.

Go all the way down to where the inlet necks down and opens in the sound. Will be a long sandy shore along the right. Then grass starts again and necks out around and out. Big flat on the right and deep channel maybe 40yds from shore. Tide really rips there and hard to anchor up if you get too far out. You need 6-8oz of lead to hold bottom. Have caught 3-4’er ‘til you got tired of reeling them in. Some big ones 6-10’ cruise the area too. Hooked but never landed the big ones. On left from there on inside edge of the point is good too. Good for other fish there too. We used cut whiting and hadens. A good spot unless wind is up too bad.

Never had any luck in that deep hole across from the mouth of Station Cr. Just because it’s a deep hole - not necessarily good. Better on side of drop to a deep hole or deep channel.

Morgan and Parrott did the trick for quantity if not quality. WIthin 5 min of getting there we had two 10lb sharks we caught and released, and probably got two dozen over the next 5-6 hours. We moved on down towards the ocean and got a huge ray that I thought would have been a 6-8ft shark given the fight it gave me. In the meantime, plenty of assholes went by us while we were anchored at WOT as close as 50 ft away. What the hell is wrong with people?

Not so much luck today, but I did hit this somehow on a shark/cobia rig with a finger mullet at the end.

33 Inches, had to throw it back :frowning:

Fished Trenchards hard on Friday and had little action. Caught a few spanish, a bluefish and a few small sharks. I had to go to the Broad to get any decent action. Got spooled twice on the Broad.

Just curious, did you catch the Spanish trolling?

No, sight casting with Mir O Lures.

I thought I reconized you in the photo.

get hooked up with some pretty big rays out there as well

Two years later, so did you find the Sharks? If you searched some areas I bet you found at least one mud/sand flat! Here’s some hit or miss areas. This time of year just look for area’s that the Fleets are anchored around then when cobia fishing is over try those areas for shark.
