Who will it be for South Carolina? I don’t see how Ward survives this season. Lots of speculation so why not add some more. Ellis Johnson is now available and I believe is a good coordinator, but I think they probably need to look for a bigger name that can provide some stability moving into the future. Possibly someone who has head coaching potential.
Not that I want this but Muschamp. He and Spurrier are friends.
Agent Muschamp has been great for UGA during his time at UF. I would love for him to come and sandbag USC next
Looks like Muschamp is heading to Auburn so I imagine we’ll keep Ward. Certainly no reason to fire him without a plan in place to upgrade. I am not an Ellis Johnson believer at all. Aside from the MI6/Clowney years, his defenses at USC were not stellar, he was a terrible head coach at Southern Miss, and his defenses at Auburn were so bad they canned him. I’d rather stick with what we got.
I would like an aggressive DC. More pressure up the middle, from the left, from the right. But rushing 4 and giving the QB forever is painful to watch.
I dont’ want my defense to beat you. I want my defense to make you beat you. Meaning so much pressure you get off you game and make mistakes.
In all honesty, neither Johnson nor Ward were all that impressive to me while at Carolina. The main reason the defense looked good the past couple years was because of guys like Devin Taylor, Clowney, Ingram,Gilmore, and Swearinger along with other important and key players. I personally think it is a drop off in talent that has made the defense so bad. Other than Williams, Moore, Surrat and Dixon brothers all the rest are just not that impressive or talented enough to be playing at a school as big as Carolina. Though with the #6 rated recruiting class this year, hoping some new guys will help improve this defense.
I agree with an aggressive defense, but you have to have a secondary to make that happen. CofC there is talent, all be it young on this defense. You can see speed and athleticism in the linebackers and the secondary. The defensive line has some 4-star guys, I am not sure what the issue is. No veteran leadership for sure and someone needs to teach them how to tackle.
Ellis?
Really?
OK. I thought he did a good job when there, but maybe I am mistaken. I had two thoughts in that thread. I was not recommending him for the eventual head coach. I did a little research to see how they did from 2008-2011 when Ellis was the coordinator. In total defense they were ranked by year 8th, 15th, 78th, and 2nd. Other than 2010 seems like his defenses were pretty solid, what am I missing?

Tackling is dying art form. You may see a good, solid form tackle from time to time but all over the place you see guys leaping to the ball carrier’s feet. The thing that irritates me the most about that is Chris Culliver did that all the time at Carolina and was average to above average at best but is somehow starting on the 49ers defense…
Apickett, you are right about the secondary. However, if your secondary can not cover then forcing the QB to throw quick is a good thing. So blitz like he11 so the DB’s dont need to stay with the WR for very long.
Bo Pelini? Rumor going around that he was in Columbia on Sunday.
Will the new hire become another DC who is thrown under the bus by Spurrier or will the new guy be getting a head ball coach in waiting title?

Weak weak attempt.

I think they should keep Whammy indefinitely. I really like what he does for the Sakkerliner defense. Has he been fired or demoted?

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Phin’s bait is old and waaay too stinky.
How much did you like Ward’s defense prior to this year? Not toooo much I bet.

No bate* here.
Are y’all trying to hire a future head ball coach or are y’all trying to hire another short timer coordinator?
Spurrier has said publically that he is gonna stay only 2-3 more years.
Obviously, there needs to be a plan put in place by Tanner if Spurrier won’t do it, or else y’all will have to go through some rebuilding if and when Sir Big Slur leaves.
Whammie is absolutely getting thrown under the bus IMO. Spurrier’s play calling cost you about 3 games this year when you were first and goal inside the 5yd line and couldn’t get it done. It’s not like I don’t understand how that feels as a fan of another team, so I’m just sayin. We didn’t blame our defense for those instances, but it seems like most of y’all look back at your season right now and say, “dang our defense is terrible- we’ve gotta get rid of Whammie.”
If he isn’t getting thrown under the bus, then tell me what defensive coordinator could have done better with the same talent/youth you had this year.

Wammie ain’t goin’ nowhere. He has not been fired and probably won’t be. The old ball sack is only staying for a few years at best. Who’s going to take that job knowing they might not be around but for a year or two?The best bet is that Johnson comes back as co-defensive coordinator or something like that. Otherwise, they are stuck with what they have until the OBS finally decides to retire.

The person that doesn’t have a job
If you want to be a HC, then knowing that position will be available soon, it might be a good move for you.
