I didn’t see a melt down. I see a man offering you to come to his home for a friendly conversation. Go be a troll somewhere else. You think you’re whitty and you like to turn people’s words around on them. That’s all you’ve done since you joined CF. If you’re this condescending to people in person then I feel sorry for you. You must be a miserable son of a biitch.

I think it would be more constructive to focus on the cobia than Larry’s meltdown, so let’s try to do that. Thanks.

Reading these posts at least shows how passionate we all are about our fishery. We obviiously have different opinions on the cause and effect. I am not a total newcomer. I grew up in Ridgeland in the 50’s and 60’s and was an early cobia fisherman. Ran the second charter boat on Hilton Head, Buddy Hester was the first. Left for many years to school at Clemson then Columbia for my career that has enabled me to move back to a house with deep water dock. I have really liked Larry’s posts, want to meet him, have sent messages to him inviting him to fish, and hope to do all. These golf courses have been here a long time. The cobia population to my knowledge has decreased in the last few years and I think with the pressure.
Forgot to mention. Had the state record in 1969 at 67 pounds. Had been 64 pounds for something like 20 years. Was broke. By a couple of pounds a couple of weeks later. My fish hung in the Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce for years

Tripped Up, I commend you on finding a nice way to tell Larry he’s full of it. That is much more tactful than how I refuted his pollutant theory.

It may not hold any at all, I could certainly be wrong about that. But where did the catfish go? Just my opinion.
What conflicts with my opinion on pollution is that the trout fishing is still about as good as it’s ever been and the spot tail fishing might actually be better than it’s ever been. Pollutants don’t seem to bother them. So I sure don’t know the answer. I don’t think it is over fishing.
Adam, thanks for covering my back:smiley:

I’ve got a question for those who know. Since the cobia that spawn in Broad River are proven to be genetically different from the fish on the offshore reefs, where do the Broad River cobia go when they aren’t in Broad River? They’ve got to go somewhere, and maybe they are getting fished hard somewhere else when they aren’t here?

They did put satellite tags on couple a while back. I know for sure about one of them and it was a fish caught at the Betsy Ross. It may not have been a fish that spawned in the river so I’m not sure if that info is useful in this situation. Larry I’m pretty sure that they said at the meeting that it’s more likely for our SC inshore fish to travel up the coast to virginia than to travel down to florida. The one that was tagged at the Betsy Ross was caught down in Florida a few years later but like I said this could have been an “offshore” fish so not sure what that tells us. Maybe Karl B will chime in on this.

They could be getting pounded on up there when they aren’t here? Seems like someone would know exactly where they go. They are only here for a short period every spring, other times they are somewhere else and other people are catching them, so our rules and limits may not make much difference at all to the population. We have them about 3 months a year, somebody else is fishing for them the other 9 months.
The few months they are here, yeah, there are a lot of boats in Port Royal fishing for them, but the old rule that 5% of the fishermen catch 95% of the fish still applies. There might be 50 boats out there, but maybe 3 guide boats and a few locals in that crowd really know what they are doing. The rest are just wishful and heard the fish were biting on the Internet. Even the few who know how aren’t taking a lot of fish. Catching cobia is somewhat like catching marlin, you’ve got to know how, plus put in a lot of long hours waiting. It’s not a easy fish to catch, even when you know how.

I didn’t see a melt down either only a man who knows what he’s talking about verbably defending an assalt on his knowledge and integrity where none is needed. I like Larry wonder where do the cobia disappear to when not in the PRS??? " it’s the reason I presented the thought/need to include the offshore fishery in slot/min.length/and boat limits" In designated areas; All the other discussions are no more than just others expressing what they see as possible reasons for the cobia decline. I’ve fished B-river for years, most times I’ll catch a few, keep one legal and release others. The catch has and is dwindling but also certain types of bait that used to be plentiful!!! Meltdown IMHO is on Warbler with an unbending I’m right and the whole worlds wrong view!!!
Dr. Michael Denson at the meeting said that the possibility of the inshore SC cobia getting over fished offshore is very slim. He said the of course that species could very well be caught there but that he feels no damage is being done to them there… Just some food for thought.

He feels? That’s encouraging words from a scientist. How can we manage a fish that we only have 3 months out of the year while somebody else is catching them for the other 9 months? And he “feels” like no damage is being done during that time? I’m so confused. Think I’ll go sand on a boat for a while, do something I know about

You do realize what you quoted is my signature, right? I’m not very original or funny so I borrowed that from a famous movie…maybe you’ve heard of it: Animal House? Here’s a clip:

Well - I was OK with just reading this thread until this. Now I want to hear more about this “communicating a threat” and the “advise you not to” crap. Ball is in your court, sir.

I implied no threat at all. Just an offer to discuss it in person. No need for an argument here. I gave my name, phone number. email and street address. That wasn’t a threat to anybody. I mean no harm. I try to walk in peace wherever I go. My door is always open. I try to keep my brain open too. I don’t hide behind anonymous screen names either, my real name is posted at the bottom of everything I say. People might not like it or agree with it, but they know who said it. Anybody who wants to talk about it can call me or come by. I guarantee it will be a friendly discussion
